Summary

Functions as the primary liaison for internal teams and the strategic planning teams. Provides counsel on how to solve business issues through strategic planning solves as they relate to client objectives. Ensures agency success by overseeing all planning activities to ensure needed resources are obtained, deliverables are provided, and deadlines are met.

What You'll Do

Function as primary liaison to internal clients (e.g. account and creative teams) on behalf of the planning team with regard to strategic and tactical decisions

  • Ensure the strategies for national and customer-specific shopper marketing programs deliver against client needs
  • Interact with relevant agency departments to ensure deliverables for all active programs can be completed within specified timelines
  • Work with resource management and senior account and planning teams to ensure coverage for deliverables for future programs
  • Partner with senior account team for development of the proposal/deck presentations

Work with senior account team to define key strategic issues and their impact on the client/agency objectives and support preparation of key elements for briefing sessions

  • Utilize the appropriate planning tools to identify information to help the client or account teams best address planning requests
  • Research facts sourced from client-owned, third party/syndicated sources
  • Distill facts into key relevant background information to inform the creative brief
  • Brief the creative team
  • Define project opportunity and specific insight with most important behavioral points of influence
  • Work with planning and account team to draft/refine the pivotal brief for creative kick-off
  • Collaborate across departments to help teams during project kick-offs and ongoing work
  • Establish the strategic tone and direction for client deliverables
  • In partnership with senior account team, present recommendations, identified strategies, and final programs to the client
  • Take the lead in evaluating the alignment of national programs, tactics, and media plans with the agreed-upon strategies and suggest alternative options to ensure agreed-upon strategies are aligned with program execution

Identify and share opportunities and suggestions on how to develop proprietary strategic planning tools and research.Own the development of planning bids and proposals as needed

  • Draft proposals for internal survey projects
  • Oversee proposal development
  • Approve and finalize cost estimates and other details for project plans and timelines

Lead the overall process through which the agency completes competitive/category/channel reviews

  • Partner with members from across the agency to source relevant data points
  • Manage the scope and deliverable
  • Support the completion of the learning summary / reporting of findings
  • Provide constructive evaluation of strategic documents and offer appropriate direction to junior planning team members
  • Mentor the development of junior staff through education and ongoing informal and formal performance feedback
  • Enter time reports once a week, at a minimum, and expense reports within 10 days of incurred expense
  • Handle other duties as assigned by supervisor

Our Ideal Candidate

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Advertising, a behavioral science field or the equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 5–7 years of Strategic Planning experience within the disciplines of shopper, brand, or sales strategy within an agency setting
  • Shopper and Customer/Trade marketing experience within the retail landscape (5+ years)
  • Applied experience with database tools and systems such as Simmons, MRI, Kantar, or equivalent
  • Comprehensive knowledge of key priorities, retailer-specific guidelines, and strategic initiatives of top retailers
  • Ability to identify appropriate planning tool based on situational need and client requests as demonstrated by: Proficiency in navigating and differentiating between multiple databases
  • Thorough understanding of what each strategic planning tool does and how it is best used
  • Applied experience with database tools and systems such as Simmons, MRI, Kantar, or equivalent
  • Recommending appropriate tools to use to internal teams based on project needs
  • Ability to communicate clearly, thoroughly and succinctly both verbally and in written form to build relationships internally and with the client teams
  • Ability to analyze results, interpret data, draw sound conclusions, and develop insightful and actionable recommendations
  • Can present material in a logical and strategic manner tailored to the audience
  • Demonstrated understanding of digital and social media, and its execution, from a retail lens
  • In-depth understanding of multiple marketing disciplines and how they can best work together to support client goals
  • Strong attention to detail and organization, demonstrated through actions such as:Effectively proofing own and others work to ensure accuracy
  • Actively and effectively managing timelines and deliverables of multiple projects and ad hoc requests simultaneously to meet pre-determined deadlines
  • Demonstrated expertise with key strategies of top 10-20 retailers in US, demonstrated by:
  • Expertise with key retailer’s strategies/priorities and ability to apply this expertise within key client’s business
  • Representing the voice of the retailer and its shoppers within the agency to articulate shopper communication priorities
